Kestrel Shutter Specifications

1.01 Scope. The contractor shall furnish and install shutters as shown on plans and herein specified, as supplied by Kestrel Manufacturing, Stowe, Pa 19464.

1.02 Operation. Interior and exterior shutters shall be designed for actual operation, suitable for use in both the open and closed positions over internal and external windows and doors respectively.

2.01 Materials. Standard, custom sized interior shutters shall be fabricated of FAS kiln dried Basswood. Standard, custom sized exterior shutters shall be fabricated of FAS kiln dried Spanish Cedar. All wood shall be sound and suitable for safe use, free of loose or open knots. Tenon pegs shall be of clear Honduras Mahogany, Operable louvers will be secured to the operating tilt bar with solid brass, threaded screw eyes.

2.02 Construction. Shutter frames will be of blind pocket mortise and tenon construction, with tenons secured in the mortise with exterior grade glue and tenon pegs. Pegs shall be exposed on the face and sanded flush. Louver tenons shall be actual extensions of the louver blade and offset to allow balancing of the louver blade. Operable louver blades will be secured to the operating tilt bar with solid brass, threaded screw eyes. Operable louvers and louver tilt bar will be pre-drilled prior to insertion of threaded screw eyes. Raised and flat panels will float within the shutter frames.

2.04 Surface Finish. All wood members shall be surfaced four sides, free of planer skips and saw marks. Shutter faces on assembled shutters shall be sanded smooth and flush, with sharp exterior edges hand smoothed. Surfaces shall be ready to finish.

3.01 Installation. Shutters shall be installed by the contractor with hinges to allow for full and safe operation, with clearances between closed shutters and windows or doors.
